Extra Curricular Activities
DIA offers a wide range of extracurricular activities to all our students. The purpose of education is to develop each student to his or her fullest potential. It is vital to take learning outside the classroom as well as expose students to a multitude of hands-on learning opportunities. Participation in extracurricular activities is one facet of the total education of a student in DIA.
Field Trips/Study Tours
Field Trips & Study Tours are designed to extend learning from units in the curriculum. Day trips are regularly organized throughout the academic year that focus on specific areas of study within subject areas.
Study Tours are overnight trips ranging from two nights to a week long. Students from Grades 4 - 11 participate on these Study Tours and these are extensions to current units and provide opportunities for experiential learning beyond the classroom and school.
Healthy Living
At DIA we believe that students need to be balanced individuals in order to be successful learners. It has been proven that students who eat healthier, less processed, foods that are rich in nutrients, fibre, protein such as fruit and vegetables are able to concentrate better and for longer during the day and show less behavioural problems both at home and at School.
At school we are in the unique position to promote healthy eating/living and to provide opportunities to consume healthy foods and beverages throughout the school day thereby instilling in our students lifelong habits of healthy eating. At DIA:
-
We teach students about nutrition and leading a balanced and healthy lifestyle
-
We strive to provide only healthy food options at school at our canteen
-
We encourage all students and parents/guardians to eat a healthy breakfast before leaving home in the morning
-
We promote sports as part of a healthy lifestyle
-
We promote adequate water intake throughout the day, especially during physical activity
-
For lower and upper PYP students have a strict time frame implemented for eating lunch in order to ensure all students have eaten during the day
-
We implement a “Tasty Tuesday” for our students/staff. Healthy samples of food are handed out during breaks/lunches
-
We implement a “Workout Wednesday” once a month, which is led by a member of staff.
Library
At DIA, the library plays a central role in providing resources and support for the research process. The library is also a central place for promoting a culture of reading.
The libraries in the Primary and Secondary campuses are stocked with nearly 14,000 copies in fiction, non-fiction and curriculum specific books. The catalogues are viewable through the OPAC system. Teachers and students are welcome to loan books for leisure, study and work.
